Relaxing drinking laws
It is all very well to say We will be moving towards a 24-hour culture in keeping with our Continental partners and our stature as one of the cosmopolitan capitals of the world. The idea to the sensible mind is a good one but those who do not have control over their drinking do not think sensibly once they start to intoxicate. What we needed first was to educate people to sensible enjoyable drinking habits.
I think this will work well in some cities but not everywhere. The local authorities will have to keep a very good eye on their patch and adjust the control as necessary.
I live on a main road. I wouldn't class this as a trouble area. There are at least 13 pubs on the road within less than a mile area. Every Friday and Saturday night there is chaos and disturbances. In your own home you cannot relax because of what is going on outside. They make nuisance, hang around, shouting, swearing, fighting, kicking and urinating on your property. The area is surrounded by elderly accommodation. You are worried if you stay in and worried if you go out. Nevertheless you know the times when the hell will let lose. After an hour or so it gets back to normal. I would be more concerned going out or coming home at night now, not knowing when the idiots are going to be coming out!
Don't take me wrong. I love to go out and let my hair down. Have a nice time with friends and drink till nothing makes sense. I am not talking about normal people. For them moving to a 24 hour culture is a gift. Let's hope that the others learn to enjoy and let everyone enjoy their social time.
