Relief Aid and India

This article does clearly interest me as I did wonder why India said "no thanks - we will ask when we need it" to the foreign country aid. Even if you are self-sufficient this kind of devastation requires lot of resources to be made available. India sure is not that rich of a country so I do admire her stance on this, even if it is a slightly misguided one.

I have also been told that in cases of this kind of national catastrophe, it is a standard practice for all civil servants in India to pay one day of their remuneration at source as donation towards the Government relief fund. Of course whatever people want to donate separately on top of that is also welcomed. It is tragic for the poorer countries to go through some kind of disaster one after the other all the time.

What makes me so proud to be in Britain is the kindness and generousity of British people who can raise this kind of money to help people in need. The way we love our animals is also like no other place in the world. I wonder if the next generation will carry this tradition on, will they?
