Escapism or coping mechanism

My childhood was coloured with multi-religion, multi-faith society. In my street there were people who believed in different religions and had different social customs from each other. I has Christian neighbour on one side and Persian family on the other side. There were muslims across the road and Hindus living next door to them. I did not really notice the difference at all. They were my friends. We played together and went to school together. As I grew up I started to learn different things my different friends were doing. We took part in every thing that was going on and unknowingly we joined in each other's beliefs. That was a good world. In my Catholic school there were lessons on religion, at which time only, we got separated and went to different classes. Until then we did not notice the difference. One thing that suppose to unite us humans, religion, was the one that was separating us.

Later on I went to a Persian school. My Persian neighbour was a priest and used to have a flame lit 24 hours a day in his house. I had hymns and quotes from Bible framed on my bedroom wall. I went to Hindu temples on festival days. Sat next to the bride for hours to see the ceremony when my muslim friends sister got married. This made me more tolerant to different beliefs and more open to varied customs. On the down side I did not learn enough of any one of those!

The title of this blog has nothing to do with what I have said so far. What I was going to write about was a Hindu idea of "Karma", the deeds as I see it. I will do that tomorrow.
