Youth of the Country

For the last few years, especially since I took on my second office, I have been a kind of a couch potato. Well more like a chair potato. The health problems added an extra excuse for not trying to change.

I am never on top of my work and forever trying to catch up on paper work. Problem is that in the evenings I am neither relaxed (cos the not-done work will be on my mind) nor I do the work with enthusiasm cos I am tired.

Some how though I have got this incentive on my mind to get back to my original self, like I was a few years ago. Since I can't find time to exercise I try to walk to the third office I am working at. This morning we, the dog and I, walked to work. It started raining as we hardly walked 15 steps. By the lunch time when the office closed it was lovely sunny and warm day. There are not going to be many nice days now and I should take the opportunity to enjoy the walks.

A friend had invited me for the evening but I decided to go to the park with the dog. Am I turning into a loner? My problem is I need continuety, not overcrowding but a connection for keeping things together. I haven't been going out a lot lately and it seems that I don't feel like it anymore. It may perhaps gets boring if you keep doing same thing all the time but for me there has to be a continuity. It is same in the friendship. If you are in not touch and are not involved in life regularly it loses the closeness. If you really care for someone then you want to be close to them and know everything about them,be part of their life, surely!

we stopped at the supermarket for some fruits and grocery. It being late, the store closes at 8 pm, there was hardly any bread and milk left. These days people are getting more relaxed and friendly. One little comment led to a good conversation with a couple in the queue. The walk in the park was great. I love to feed the ducks. The dog doesn't like it. She gets jealous. I felt very happy after the walk. This park has been redesigned recently. There are more sports equipments now and it was pleasent to watch teenagers play football, basketballs etc. Instead of causing damage and destruction like they used to. Although I dread to say that as the winter starts and dark evenings set in, it will be frightening to get in that park with the gangs of youths hanging in there.

I suppose my reaction also has something to do with my mood. As I was in the good mood I would have not taken any notice of their bad behaviour. It was different yesterday though. I went to an important meeting. People in the meeting were very negative thinking people. The subject we were discussing did not go the way it was hoped. My views were different than of the others. I tried to show positive side to it but they did not want to open their minds. They had come with an idea in their heads and could not see beyond that. We all want the best but if that is not achievable then we should look for the best from what is offerred. As I was the only one (other person who supported my view did not say anything) I would not have got anywhere without some backing. In the end I gave up. I got angry on myself on the way back that I did not put my opposition on the record.

When I got back there were at least 15 youths hanging around my house, drinking strongbows and eating chips. I live on a main road. Upstairs to my office in a corner house. I have a step to go inside the house. Since the new off licence shop opened up two doors away, there is always a chaos at the week ends. We seem to have lots of problems with the kids gathering at street corners. There are old peoples flats around and they feel threatened with the rowdy behavior of these kids. I like to know if it is same situation in other countries. Our excuse is that the kids have nothing to do and no where to go. When I arrived they were messing around on the step and there was litter everywhere. Every time they break glass bottles after drinking alcohol out of it. There was glass everywhere.I took it badly as I was in a bad mood to start of with. Can't you expect peace and comfort even in your own home?

No doubt there are some nice well behaved kids too but the majority that I come across are not amongst them. Whose responsibility is it to provide stimulation, education, manners and culture in the younger generation? Is it the Government, Police, education department or the parents? It worries me at times that in 15/20 years' time the country will be in the hands of this generation!
