Saturday Walk

What is it with me, Saturdays and the dog walks? I seem to get into one kind of mischief or the other. Recently, my friend with a lovely new puppy dog showed me a great place to walk the dog. After work on Saturday lunch time I drove to the place. As soon as I parked the car my phone rang. The caller wanted to make an appointment but I had left my handbag in the estate part of the car with the dog. I jumped out of the driver's seat and made an appointment in my diary, got the dog out, shut the boot and off we went for a walk. I was very pleased with myself for walking for nearly an hour or so. We had ventured into the fields rather than staying on the man made footpath. It was deserted and I decided to turn back. There was a middle aged couple walking towards us. The dog being the friendliest soul on the earth went up to greet them. As usual, me to prove my "If there was a competition on talking she could win" label started chatting to them. Oh boy, was I glad I talked to them? As it happens, my car door was wide open when they arrived in the car park. Since they did not see anyone or any damage to the car, they shut the door, driver's door, with their elbow (not to smudge the finderprints in case !) I had left the door open to get my diary out of the boot and then just locked the car with the remote and walked off ! Oh my new car! I only had it a few days! On top of that I had left my handbag in the boot, with all the keys for my three offices! Well, I walked the return journey in half the time I think. If my mind was not occupied with swearing to myself, I could have had a heart attack ! The car was ok. That was very lucky. How can I be so stupid! I wrote a thank you note and stuck it to their car. Never again ! I am going to be so careful from now on.

Car crimes are just a norm in this city. The place was empty and deserted so it would have been just easy for the criminal but I was very lucky this time. Unfortunately an elderly lady in the next street to my place was not lucky. She lives in a block of flats with an emergency warden service. She answered the door to two men who said they were from the Water Company. Although the lady was a little hesitant they sweet talked her into coming in to check her water meter. As one kept her occupied downstairs the other man went through her bedroom and stole £400 she had saved. Despite repeated warnings from the Police and the relatives about not letting strangers in she was just coerced into it. Mind you, the Police said that it may have been a good thing because otherwise they could have been forceful physically and hurt her. She has done nothing wrong but she feels too embarrassed to face people now.

We need to tell our young to be more careful and not trust the people they do not know. We also need to tell our elderly the same things. One is just developing and not have enough experience and the other is just declining and forget their experience. It is not fair that we have to get old and lose our abilities. Is human life to its fullest, to its most self sufficient, only in between these two stages? Should the social structure not be set to protect our elderly just like we protect our young? Of course it should but how do we do it with still keeping their independence?
